Replace a Blower Wheel (Air Handler)

Swap the squirrel-cage wheel: set screw on the FLAT of the shaft, correct wheel orientation/rotation, center the wheel in the housing with the proper inlet gap, balance and clean it, then verify CFM/external static and amp draw.

Before you start

•Wheel confirmed as the issue: cracked/broken blades, heavy dirt loading (lost CFM), a spun hub/stripped set-screw seat, or imbalance causing vibration.
•Replacement wheel matching the OEM: diameter and width, bore (shaft) size, rotation, and number/pitch of blades — a wrong wheel changes CFM and load.
•Power can be killed at the disconnect/breaker and a meter/clamp + manometer are available.

Isolate & remove

Kill power, verify 0 V
Cut power at the disconnect/breaker and verify 0 V before reaching into the blower. Note the wheel's depth/position and inlet-ring relationship before pulling it.
Tools: Multimeter
⚠ Verify 0 V — never reach into a blower that can be energized.
Pull the blower assembly and the old wheel
Slide out the blower housing/motor assembly, loosen the set screw, and pull the wheel off the shaft. Note rotation direction and which way the wheel hub faces.

Fit, center & set

Fit the wheel in the correct orientation/rotation
Slide the matching wheel on so the blade scoop matches the rotation direction (a backward wheel moves almost no air). Confirm the hub faces the same way as the original.

Tighten the set screw on the shaft FLAT
Rotate the shaft so the set screw seats on the machined FLAT (not the round of the shaft) and torque it down. On the round it will slip and spin the hub, chewing the bore.

Center the wheel with the proper inlet gap
Position the wheel so it's centered in the housing and the inlet ring (venturi) sits with the correct, even gap/overlap into the wheel inlet all the way around. Off-center or a wrong inlet gap causes recirculation, noise, and lost CFM. Spin it by hand to confirm no rub and decent balance.

Verify airflow & amps

Verify CFM/static and amp draw
Reinstall, energize on a call, and confirm strong supply airflow. Measure external static / target CFM and clamp the motor amps against the FLA — a rubbing or off-center wheel shows up as noise, low CFM, or high amps.
