Replace a Defrost Sensor (Heat Pump)

Replace the coil defrost thermostat/thermistor, clip it to the correct spot on the outdoor coil tube (where the manufacturer specifies), verify its resistance-vs-temperature, then confirm defrost initiates AND terminates on temperature.

Before you start

•Sensor confirmed as the fault: outdoor coil ices over and won't go into defrost, or it defrosts but won't terminate (runs long / blows steam) — and the sensor reads out-of-range for the coil temperature.
•Correct replacement: the OEM defrost thermostat (a snap-disc that closes/opens at a set temp) or thermistor (resistance-vs-temp), matched to the defrost board's input type.
•Power can be killed at the disconnect and a meter is available; know the maker's mounting location on the coil.

Isolate & remove

Kill power, verify 0 V
Pull the disconnect and verify 0 V before working in the outdoor unit. Note the old sensor's exact clip location on the coil tube.

Unclip and disconnect the old sensor
Remove the old sensor from its clip on the coil tube/return bend and disconnect its leads from the defrost board. The mounting spot matters — it must read true coil temperature.
Target: Note the manufacturer's mounting location on the coil tube

Mount & match

Clip the new sensor to the correct coil spot
Attach the new sensor to the exact location the maker specifies (typically a lower return bend / liquid-side tube) with good metal-to-metal contact. A loose or wrong-location sensor reads air temp, not coil temp, and mistimes defrost.
Target: Tight contact on the OEM coil location for a true coil-temp reading
Verify resistance vs temperature
Ohm the sensor and compare to the temp/resistance chart at the current coil temp (for a thermostat type, confirm it's closed below its trip temp and open above). A reading off the chart = a bad sensor.

Verify defrost cycle

Confirm defrost initiates and terminates on temp
Run the heat pump in heat and either wait for or force a defrost (per the board's test pins). Confirm defrost initiates when the coil is cold/iced and, critically, TERMINATES on temperature (not just on the timer) once the coil warms — a sensor fault often shows as long, full-timer defrosts.
