Install a Hard-Start Kit (Condenser)

A potential-relay + start-capacitor kit for a single-phase compressor that hard-starts (long line sets, low starting voltage, marginal start). It is NOT a cure for a failing compressor. Wire the start cap through the potential relay correctly, then verify it starts and that the relay drops the start cap out of the circuit.

Before you start

•Hard-start symptom confirmed: the compressor struggles/buzzes and trips on start, or starts slowly, with adequate voltage and a good run capacitor — often on long line sets or weak-supply situations.
•NOT a bandaid for a dying compressor: confirm the compressor isn't mechanically locked or grounded/shorted (a true seized/grounded compressor is a replacement, not a start-kit candidate).
•Correct kit: a potential relay + start capacitor sized for the compressor (not just a generic 'one-size' relay-PTC for marginal cases), and the disconnect can be pulled.

Isolate & confirm fit

Pull the disconnect, verify 0 V, bleed caps
Pull the disconnect, verify 0 V, and discharge the run (and any existing start) capacitor before wiring. Start capacitors hold a serious charge.
Tools: Multimeter

Confirm it's a start problem, not a bad compressor
Re-confirm the compressor windings aren't shorted/grounded and it's not mechanically locked. A hard-start kit helps a marginal start — it will not rescue a failing/grounded compressor and can mask a real fault.

Wire through the potential relay

Wire the start cap through the potential relay
Wire per the kit diagram: the start capacitor connects to the compressor START terminal through the potential relay's contacts (normally-closed at rest), and the relay COIL senses the start-winding back-EMF. As the motor comes up to speed, the rising voltage opens the relay and removes the start cap.

Mount and secure the components
Mount the relay and start cap so they can't vibrate against sharp edges or get wet, and make tight, insulated connections. A loose start-cap lead arcs and can weld the relay.

Verify start & drop-out

Confirm a clean, fast start
Restore power and call for cooling. The compressor should snap up to speed quickly with no buzz/stall. Clamp the start amps — they spike briefly then settle to running LRA/RLA range.

Target: Fast clean start; start-amp spike collapses to normal running amps
Confirm the relay drops the start cap out
Verify the potential relay opens once the motor is up to speed so the start capacitor is OUT of the circuit during running (a start cap left in the circuit overheats and fails). If it stays in, the relay is mis-sized/miswired.
