Replace a High-Limit / Rollout Switch (Furnace)

A tripped manual-reset ROLLOUT switch signals a real problem — cracked heat exchanger, blocked flue, or bad combustion — so diagnose and fix the CAUSE, don't just reset/replace. The auto-reset HIGH-LIMIT protects on low airflow. Match the temp rating and verify the trip plus correct airflow.

Before you start

•Understand which switch tripped: a manual-reset ROLLOUT switch (near the burners) trips on flame rollout/spillage; an auto-reset HIGH-LIMIT (in the heat-exchanger air stream) trips on overheat from low airflow.
•If a rollout tripped, the combustion problem is found and corrected FIRST (cracked heat exchanger, blocked/restricted flue, dirty/misaligned burners, blocked combustion air) — the switch is replaced only because it tripped, not as the fix.
•Power can be killed at the furnace switch and a meter is available.

Diagnose why it tripped

Find the real cause of a rollout trip
A manual-reset rollout switch tripped means combustion gases rolled OUT of the burner box. Inspect for a cracked/rusted heat exchanger, a blocked or disconnected flue, plugged combustion air, or dirty/misaligned burners. Fix that — resetting alone leaves a CO hazard.
⚠ A tripped rollout = flame spillage; do NOT just reset and walk away — find and correct the combustion fault (possible CO/cracked heat exchanger).
For a high-limit trip, confirm airflow
An auto-reset high-limit trips on overheat — almost always LOW airflow: dirty filter, blocked return/supply, failed blower, undersized duct, or wrong blower speed. Restore airflow rather than swapping the limit.

Match & install

Kill power and remove the switch
Turn off the furnace switch, verify 0 V, and remove the switch from its bracket. Note its mounting and orientation so the replacement reads the same heat.
Tools: Multimeter
⚠ Verify 0 V before disconnecting.
Match the temp rating and reset type
Install the OEM switch with the SAME trip temperature, reset type (manual rollout vs auto high-limit), and mounting. A wrong-temp limit either nuisance-trips or fails to protect against overheat.

Verify protection & airflow

Run a cycle and confirm it stays closed with proper airflow
Restore power, run a full heat cycle with the corrected cause, and confirm the switch holds closed and the furnace cycles normally on the thermostat — not on the limit. Verify temperature rise is in the nameplate range.
