Install a Media Air Cleaner Cabinet

Install a high-MERV media filter cabinet on the return: size it to the unit's CFM so the deep-pleated media doesn't choke airflow, mind the ADDED static pressure (don't starve the blower — re-check total external static after), seal the cabinet so air can't bypass the media, then set the airflow/return and confirm the system still breathes.

Before you start

  • Cabinet sized to the system airflow — a 4–5 in deep-pleat media is lower resistance than a 1 in high-MERV, but a too-small cabinet for the CFM still over-restricts. Match the cabinet's rated CFM to the blower.
  • Static-pressure budget understood: a high-MERV media adds external static; on a marginal duct system it can drop airflow below spec and hurt capacity / raise furnace temperature rise. Know the current total external static (TESP) before adding it.
  • Return-side location with room for the cabinet and a removable access for the media; correct media size for the chosen cabinet.
